News Update: This is the first time that an official report has come out about the disappearance of such a large number of tigers in a year. Earlier, between January 2019 and January 2022, 13 tigers were reported missing from Ranthambore National Park.
In the last one year, 25 out of 75 tigers have gone missing in Rajasthan’s Ranthambore National Park. This information was given to the park officials by Rajasthan’s Chief Wildlife Warden Pawan Kumar Upadhyay on last Monday. This is the first time that an official report of such a large number of tigers going missing in a year has come to light.
A Committee is Being Formed to Investigate the Missing Tigers
The wildlife department has formed a three-member committee to investigate the missing tigers. The committee will review the monitoring records and recommend action if any lapses are found on the part of park officials. Officials said that the main focus at the moment is on the 14 tigers who disappeared between May 17 and September 30 and whose whereabouts are yet to be traced.
Chief wildlife warden Pawan Kumar Upadhyay said, “The committee will submit its report within two months. We have identified some monitoring lapses which we want to correct. Recently I started collecting weekly monitoring reports, which revealed that these tigers were not recorded on trap cameras. The matter is being taken very seriously.”
Park officials say that the high number of tigers in the park is leading to conflicts as there are territorial fights among tigers in the same area. The 75 tigers include young tigers and cubs. The 900 sq km area of the park is finding it difficult to accommodate these tigers. According to a study conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (2006-2014), the park can safely shelter only about 40 adult tigers.
